In my hypothesis I stated that the egg in corn syrup would shrink and that the egg in red water would expand. My hypothesis was proven correct. I predicted that the egg in corn syrup would shrink because there is less water in the hyper tonic solution then inside the egg so the water would move through the selectively permeable membrane to make equilibrium. In addition, I knew that the egg in the colored water would expand because there is more water outside the egg then inside so the water wants to move through the selectively permeable membrane and go into the cell to make equilibrium. We did the Egg osmosis lab to see how the process of osmosis works in a Hypo and Hypertonic solution. When we took the eggs out to observe them after being in their substances we took the egg in red water out a little bit before the other. However this was taken into consideration. The independent variable was the substance. The dependent variable was the effect on the egg that the substance caused. The control variable was the egg. The table that I made explains what the eggs looked like before and after being in their solutions. It also explains what the inside of the egg looked like after being in the substance. One of the graphs explains the mass of the two eggs before and after. The other shows the volume of the liquid in the beaker before and after. I believe that this experiment was successful because it allowed me to get a better visuality of how osmosis works. If I had to change anything I would change the hyper tonic solution I used to see other changes to the egg.
